The NFL has revealed the 32 players nominated for the prestigious 2023 Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award, an annual accolade acknowledging players who exhibit exceptional sportsmanship on the field. Each of the 32 NFL teams has nominated one player for this honor, recognizing individuals who embody the highest standards of fair play.
Established in 2014, the award pays tribute to the late Art Rooney Sr., the founding owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers and a revered member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
A distinguished panel from the NFL Legends Community, featuring Warrick Dunn, Larry Fitzgerald (2014 Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award recipient), Curtis Martin (Pro Football Hall of Famer), and Leonard Wheeler, will undertake the task of selecting eight finalists. These finalists, four from the AFC and four from the NFC, will be featured on the Pro Bowl ballot under the NFL Sportsmanship Award category when players cast their votes in December.
Troy Vincent, NFL executive vice president of football operations, emphasized the significance of sportsmanship in the game, stating, “Sportsmanship is the core of the game, the vanguard of public confidence, the keeper of game integrity. These Rooney Sportsmanship Award nominees exemplify the spirit of fair play and the values of respect, integrity, commitment to the team, and resiliency at the highest level of competition.”
The award, presented annually, recognizes an NFL player who best demonstrates on-field sportsmanship, encompassing fair play, respect for the game and opponents, and integrity in competition. The winner of the Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award will be revealed as part of the NFL Honors ceremony preceding Super Bowl LVIII.
