The National Football League is thrilled to welcome NFL Legend Sammis Reyes to the Mundo NFL on-air talent roster, marking an exciting milestone in NFL history. As the first Chilean-born player to ever grace the NFL field, Reyes will play a pivotal role as part of Mundo NFL, the league's premier source for Latino fans looking for NFL news, video highlights, fantasy football, game-day coverage, and much more.
Reyes will host the captivating and insightful show "NFL Cultura with Sammis Reyes," a weekly content series exclusively on Mundo NFL. Through this engaging platform, he will share his unique journey and provide commentary on his experiences as an NFL player. Reyes will also connect these experiences with current NFL events, offering fans worldwide a fresh perspective.
Formerly a tight end, Reyes embarked on his NFL journey with the Washington Football Team in 2021, followed by stints with the Chicago Bears in 2022 and the Jacksonville Jaguars in the lead-up to the 2023 season.
Javier Farfan, a cultural strategist at the NFL, acknowledged Reyes's extraordinary background: "Sammis is a talented young professional with firsthand experience of being not just a Latino player in the NFL, but the first Chilean player in the league. His knowledge of the game and what it's like to perform at the highest levels of the sport will provide unique insight for our fans in an educational and informative way. We look forward to Sammis sharing his stories and expanding the reach of our game to Latinos everywhere."
Reyes's path to the NFL is nothing short of remarkable. Born in Talcahuano, Chile, he spent his formative years in Chile before relocating to the United States at the age of 14. He pursued a career in basketball, showcasing his skills at North Broward Prep in Florida and later at Tulane University. This remarkable 6-foot-5 athlete graced the basketball court for the Green Wave, playing two seasons and also dedicating a decade to the Chilean national team program.
Following his basketball career, Reyes turned his focus to American football, immediately grabbing the attention of NFL scouts with his outstanding pro day performance. During his pro day, he ran an impressive 4.64 in the 40-yard dash, recorded an impressive 31 bench press reps, and showcased a 40" vertical leap along with a 10'5" broad jump.
Reyes was poised to enter the NFL through the International Pathway Program (IPP), an initiative aimed at providing international players with the necessary training and guidance to break into the league. However, his pro day performance was so striking that the Washington Football Team decided to sign him directly, bypassing the IPP process. In his debut season in 2021, Reyes participated in 11 games and even earned a start while primarily contributing on special teams.
Reyes embraced this new challenge of creating engaging content, aligning with his personal journey of surmounting obstacles. As he aptly put it, "As a Latino athlete and former NFL player, I am no stranger to adversity, and whether it was transitioning from basketball to football or competing for playing time, challenges have been my prime motivator in life."
Reyes continued, "This new challenge of creating content is different than what I have done before, but the prospect of connecting with this growing fan base is a true honor. I am thankful for the opportunity to join Mundo NFL and eager to give fans a behind-the-scenes look at what it's like to be an NFL player while engaging with them through unique content opportunities."
