Baltimore, Maryland - A night meant for celebration turned into a nightmare at Morgan State University last night, as an active shooter unleashed chaos during the university's pre-Homecoming ball. The horrifying incident left four men and one woman injured, sending shockwaves through the historically black college's community.



The evening was supposed to be filled with joy and anticipation as students gathered to crown their 'Mister & Miss Morgan State University.' However, tragedy struck when gunshots rang out, shattering the peaceful atmosphere on campus.


As the community grapples with this shocking act of violence, numerous questions remain unanswered. The Baltimore Police Department has not confirmed whether there was more than one gunman, leaving the city on high alert, with at least one assailant still at large. It's the third October shooting on Morgan State University's campus in as many years, highlighting a distressing trend.




In response to this horrific event, MSU President David Wilson announced the suspension of classes for the university and called for an emergency meeting to assess and reassess homecoming week activities. The safety and well-being of the students, faculty, and staff are of paramount concern.

The dramatic moment when SWAT teams raided dorm rooms in search of the gunmen added to the tension and fear that gripped the campus. The uncertainty surrounding the identity and motive of the shooter(s) only intensifies the distress felt by the university community.

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott expressed his condolences and frustration, citing this incident as a tragic example of the ongoing epidemic of gun violence plaguing not just Baltimore but the entire nation. As of September 4th, 2023, there have been 484 mass shootings in the United States this year alone, underscoring the urgent need for comprehensive action on gun control.


This tragic event occurred on the first day of homecoming for Morgan State University, a day that was meant to be a joyful reunion of students, faculty, friends, and family. As the community reels from the senseless shooting, thoughts and prayers pour in for all those impacted by this heartbreaking incident.



Governor Wes Moore expressed his gratitude for the heroic efforts of first responders and pledged to work closely with officials to ensure safety and support for the university community during this trying time.


In the face of this devastating tragedy, the Morgan State University community and the city of Baltimore stand together, united in their determination to seek justice, find answers, and put an end to the scourge of gun violence that has marred this cherished institution.
